Fitness, Fun, and Your Feet

Did you begin the new year with a jog around the neighborhood or a basketball game with friends? We hope your feet were fitness-ready! If it has been a while since you’ve exercised regularly or played a sport, there are a few things to consider before continuing your new year’s resolution. The team at Westfield Foot and Ankle, LLC sees everything from sprains and fractures to overuse injuries. Take our advice and follow along for some best practices.

Pick your shoes with fitness in mind

When picking your footwear for exercise, keep in mind that you are looking for shoes that have proper support and provide room for movement. To avoid twists and sprains, select shoes that offer ankle support. To avoid blisters, corns, and calluses, be sure that your shoes aren’t too big or too small. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that one shoe works for all sports and fitness activities. While shoe shopping, ask for advice based on your new activity.

Check with your podiatrist

It may be too early to jump back into exercising if you’re recovering from an injury or if you were recently diagnosed with a foot condition. Ask your podiatrist before making any fitness plans. You may have one exercise in mind, but your podiatrist may recommend something different to lessen the impact on your feet and ankles.

Bring and friend, and take it easy

A fitness pal is one way to accomplish your goal with some friendly help. If exercise is new for you, additional encouragement can make a big difference. Having someone tag along is also a great way to remind each other to take it easy. Don’t forget to stretch, ease into new exercises, and listen to your body. Remember, pain is never normal.

Let us make sure your feet and ankles are fitness-ready. Before your next exercise session, schedule a visit or call (317) 896-6655. Dr. David Sullivan is a Certified Wound Specialist, and he serves patients who live in Westfield, IN, or the Hamilton County area.
