Podiatrists Can Help Children, Too
We often think that podiatrists are only for adults, but did you know that children can benefit, too? This includes the youngest of our patients. The team at Westfield Foot and Ankle, LLC specializes in children’s foot and ankle conditions. We also see the result of delayed treatment during youth; unfortunately, ignoring symptoms can cause pain later in life.
If you visit our office with your son or daughter, here are a few ways we can help:
Custom orthotics
Children commonly have flat feet, which is a condition that many children eventually outgrow. However, if your child is complaining of pain or skipping out on playing their favorite sport because of discomfort, using custom orthotics is a simple solution to meet the needs of their developing feet. Orthotics also help with in-toeing and out-toeing. The devices keep the bones in the feet in the proper alignment. Using 3D scanning technology, we create individually made devices to meet the unique foot needs of your child.
Ankle sprains or fractures
Ankle sprains and fractures are common injuries for children, especially if they play sports like basketball. It’s very important to correctly diagnose and treat these conditions, as delayed treatment can lead to another injury or arthritis later in life.
Ingrown toenails
Your child’s feet are growing quickly, so be sure to keep up with the proper shoe size. When shoes are too tight, your child has an increased risk of developing ingrown toenails. Another cause is improperly trimming the nails or ripping them. Depending on your child’s age, help them clip their nails or show them the proper way by modeling how you clip your toenails.
Don’t forget to check on your children’s feet. Remember, we’re here to help them, too. If your child complains of pain, make an appointment with Dr. David Sullivan, a Certified Wound Specialist, and his team to begin treatment without delay.
