Look down! It’s Diabetes Awareness Month
Did you know that November is Diabetes Awareness Month? There are many signs and symptoms to look for with this chronic condition, but your feet may be telling you something, too. As part of raising awareness this month, the doctors at Westfield Foot and Ankle, LLC are here to encourage you to look down and check the health of your feet.
If you can relate to the statements below, it’s time to begin a conversation with your podiatrist.
Oh no! When did I cut my foot?
If you’re looking closely at your feet and discover a days-old cut, it’s time to go to the podiatrist. One complication from diabetes is peripheral neuropathy, which is nerve damage. As part of this, a patient can no longer feel if something is sharp or too hot, for example. Unfortunately, a person can step on something sharp and not realize an injury has occurred until it becomes infected.
Yikes! This cut is taking a long time to heal.
We get it — accidents happen. However, if you notice that your cuts or wounds are taking a long time to heal, you may need to schedule an appointment with your podiatrist. One complication of diabetes is poor circulation, and this means that you may not have enough blood flowing to your feet. This blood flow helps with healing sores or wounds. Smoking can also contribute to poor circulation.
My parents have issues with their feet, too.
Heredity may also play a role in diabetes. If your family members have diabetes, you have an increased risk of developing this condition. Learn more about your family history and find a podiatrist who can answer questions about your risk.
