Summer is a time to let loose and relax. But you don’t want to get too carefree, and forget all about your foot health. Why? Make the wrong choices this summer, and you’ll be living with pain or infections by the time September rolls around. Want to stay safe? Just keep reading, and our Westfield podiatrist will tell you all the summer foot hazards to avoid this season!

1.     Ditching Your shoes

Sure, it might feel great to run barefoot through the grass. But that could expose your feet to cuts and bruises. Or, you might pick up a fungal infection that would leave your feet itchy or even oozing. Instead, cover your feet whenever you’re outdoors.

2.     Avoiding Unsupportive Shoes

Flip flops can protect your feet from infection. But that’s about all they’ll do. So reserve these shoes for days by the pool, and choose more supportive foot wear the rest of the summer. Otherwise, heel pain will be the focal point of your vacation time! For supportive footwear even by the pool, consider Powerstep Sandals  which are available to try on and purchase in our office.

3.     Never Slowing Down

This is the season to be on the go, but running around all day in hot weather can leave you with painful, swollen feet. To avoid this issue, take sitting breaks when possible. (Bonus points if you prop your feet up when you do.) And, after really long days in the sun, try giving your feet a cool soak with Epsom salts to reduce next day pain and swelling.

4.     Giving In To Sweat

Just because its hot out doesn’t mean you have to let your feet sweat. Because doing so increases your risk of fungal infection, as well as blisters, corns, calluses and foot odor. Fight the moisture with sweat wicking socks. And, if your feet do feel damp, change your socks as soon as possible, washing and drying your feet before putting on a new pair.

5.     Feeling The Burn

This is the season when your delicate foot skin gets more sun exposure than ever before. To avoid sun burns (and the risk of skin cancer on your feet) make sure to coat your feet in sunscreen. A reapply at regular intervals if you’ll be outside for long periods of time.

In our podiatry practice, we know that sore feet can put a damper on even the best of summer days. That’s why Dr. David Sullivan is here to help! At the first sign of discomfort, reach out and request an immediate appointment. Our team will get you back on your feet, before summer foot hazards ruin your days in the sun.
